
Getting the Heat Right for Alloy Wheel Powder Curing
Curing powder on alloy wheels is a bit of a balancing act. You need enough heat to get deep into the coating, but you can’t just blast it blindly. That’s why we stick with shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps. Instead of wasting time heating up all the air in the oven, these lamps shoot energy straight into the coating and the aluminum. It’s direct. It’s efficient. The Power Side of Things When we spec out lamps for wheels, we focus on a high wattage-per-centimeter ratio. Why? Because you want that coating to hit the gelation point fast. We usually go with high-voltage setups. It keeps the current draw low but keeps the heat flux where it needs to be. Just a heads-up: if you’re running high-wattage tubes, make sure your wiring and power supply can actually handle the load. If they can’t, you’ll get voltage drops, and that leads to patchy, uneven curing. Nobody wants that. Quartz and Wavelengths Heat is brutal on equipment. To stop the tubes from bowing under all that stress, we use heavy-wall quartz glass. Depending on the shape of your wheels, we might add a selective coating to the quartz. This basically tweaks the emission spectrum so the powder absorbs the heat more effectively. Shortwave emitters are our go-to because they hit the target quickly. But there is a catch. If your conveyor speed isn’t dialed in just right, SWIR can “over-bake” the edges of the rim. It’s a powerful tool, so you have to tune it. Making it Work in Your Shop We didn’t want you to have to rebuild your whole line just to use our lamps. Most of ours are simple drop-in replacements for the big-name brands. We use standard connectors, so wiring them up is fast and painless. Same footprint, same thermal output—just better.
