
Let’s Talk Halogen Infrared Heat Lamps
Ever wonder why some heat lamps just… work better? It comes down to the guts of the thing. We use a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz envelope and fill the whole thing with halogen gas. The magic here is that the gas stops the tungsten from evaporating and gunking up the glass. This means we can crank the heat way higher than your average light bulb. You get this concentrated blast of shortwave infrared that hits your material almost the second you flip the switch. The nitty-gritty on power When we’re picking a lamp, it’s all about how much heat you actually need hitting the surface. If you’re doing something like shrink wrapping or blowing PET bottles, you need a ton of energy in a very short window. That’s why we use high-voltage setups—think 230V or 400V. It lets us pack more wattage into a shorter tube without blowing a fuse. But here’s the catch: these high-density tubes are brutal on your reflectors. If your reflectors are dirty or pitted, you’re basically throwing your energy away into the air. Keep them clean. Quartz and the “easy swap” We use quartz glass because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. Sometimes we add coatings to the glass to tweak the heat spectrum or just give the surface some extra protection. As for the plugs, we stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because they’re simple. When a lamp finally burns out, you don’t want to spend an hour rewiring a rack. You just pop the old one out and drop a new one in. Done. Using them in the real world These things are built for the chaos of a high-speed production line. If you’re blowing PET bottles, you need that plastic to soften fast and evenly. Shortwave heat is great for this because it sinks deeper into the plastic than longwave heat does. It means your machine can be smaller and your warm-up times are way shorter. Just a heads-up: these lamps getinsanely hot. Don’t skimp on your cooling fans or the housing. If you do, you’ll end up frying your wiring and killing your lamps way sooner than you should.
