
Getting the Cure Right on Alloy Wheels
If you’ve ever tried to powder coat alloy wheels, you know the struggle. You need the coating to stick perfectly, but you can’t just blast it with heat or you’ll warp the metal. It’s a balancing act. That’s why we lean on shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps. Instead of heating the air around the wheel, these lamps punch right through the powder and heat the metal from the inside out. It’s a much smarter way to do it. The Power Play To get those wheels cured fast, you need serious heat. We use high-wattage quartz tubes to make that happen. Here’s the trick: focus on the wattage-per-centimeter. When you’ve got a high density of power in a small area, you hit that 180°C to 200°C sweet spot in a flash. The faster the heat hits, the faster your conveyor moves. And faster conveyors mean more wheels out the door every hour. The Hardware Stuff We build these lamps with high-purity quartz because the constant jumping from cold to scorching hot would shatter cheaper glass. But the lamps are only half the story. You need a good reflector—usually gold or aluminum—behind the tube. Think of it as a mirror that bounces the energy back onto the inner rim. Without one, you’re basically wasting half your electricity heating up the oven walls. One quick tip: double-check your connectors. Whether you’re using R7s or SK15, make sure they’re seated tight. If they’re loose, they’ll arc, and you’ll end up with a burnt-out socket and a dead line. The Trade-off Moving from those massive, old-school convection ovens to localized IR is a breath of fresh air. You stop wasting time heating up a giant room of air and just heat the part itself. It’s a huge time-saver. But there’s a catch. Because SWIR lamps are so intense, there’s very little room for error. If your conveyor timing is off by even a few seconds, you can scorch the powder or over-cure the wheel. You’ll want a PLC that’s dialed in perfectly, or you’re going to end up with a pile of ruined wheels.
