If you’re setting up a drying line, you’ve probably realized that picking between shortwave (SW) and mediumwave (MW) quartz lamps is where the real decision happens. It’s the difference between a line that flies through production and one that eats your electricity budget for breakfast. Both use quartz because, frankly, these things get hot enough to melt almost anything else. But the way they actually hit the fabric? Totally different. The deep dive vs. the surface touch Shortwave lamps run hot. Really hot. Because of that, the energy punches deep into the fibers. If you’re dealing with thick fabrics or those tricky synthetic blends that take forever to warm up, SW is your best bet. It gets the core of the material moving fast. Mediumwave is a gentler beast. It doesn’t dive as deep; instead, it hangs out on the surface. This is a lifesaver when you need to dry the top layer without scorching the fabric or overheating the middle. A word of caution on the gear We use high-purity quartz because it can handle being turned on and off rapidly without shattering from the thermal shock. But here is the catch: if you go with shortwave for a high-density job, your power supply has to be spot on. If you over-volt a shortwave tube, you’ll burn it out in a few weeks. It’s a headache you don’t want. Mediumwave is a bit more relaxed on the electrical side, though you’ll need more physical space for the lamps to get the same amount of heat. The trade-offs you’ll actually feel Shortwave gives you massive heat density. The big win here? You can actually make your oven smaller. But keep in mind, you’ll need better reflectors to push that energy down toward the fabric, which costs a bit more. Mediumwave is simpler. It’s cheaper to run and a breeze to wire up. The downside is your conveyor belt has to be longer because the fabric needs more time under the lamps to get rid of the moisture. Which one should you pick? Here’s a rule of thumb: if your fabric is soaking wet, go with mediumwave. Water molecules just love mediumwave frequencies. But for thin, PET-based textiles? Shortwave wins on speed every time. Just do yourself a favor and double-check your cooling fans. You don’t want the ambient heat around those quartz tubes turning your workspace into a sauna.
