
The Real Deal on Halogen Infrared Heating
Most people see a halogen lamp and think “light bulb.” But in our world, these are actually high-density heat machines. Here is how they work: we take a tungsten filament, wrap it in a quartz envelope, and fill the whole thing with a specific halogen gas mix. It creates this cool little cycle where evaporated tungsten actually jumps back onto the filament. Why does that matter? Because it stops the quartz from turning black and keeps your heat steady for thousands of hours. It just keeps working.
Getting the Power Right
When you’re picking a lamp, the voltage and wattage are what define your “thermal footprint.” If you need a fast ramp-up for a quick production cycle, go with high-wattage tubes. High-voltage setups are great too—you get more heat density without needing a massive amount of current. But a word of warning: if you push 2000W+ through a short tube, things getintense. That localized heat is no joke. Make sure your housing and cooling fans can actually handle it, or you’re just going to melt your sockets.
Quartz and Connections
We stick with quartz because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. Some of our lamps even have special coatings. These shift the emission spectrum so the heat actually hits your target instead of just warming up the air around it. As for the plugs, we use the usual suspects like R7s or Sk15. They fit tight, which is exactly what you want. A loose connection here is a nightmare—it creates an arc that can melt your wiring in a matter of minutes.
Putting Them to Work
You’ll usually see these in PET blowing, plastic welding, or paint curing lines. They’re a great way to replace those old, clunky resistive heaters. Since they put out short-wave infrared, the heat sinks deep into the material rather than just scorching the surface. Your throughput gets a lot faster. Just be careful with your sensors. If you crank the intensity too high, you’ll burn the outside of your product before the core even gets warm. It’s all about that balance.
